In my younger days in theatre acting, I was taught to live in the moment, never break eye contact, or never break character.I played the role of professional, charismatic job se eker.I became dedicated to listening for the followingThe subtext of what was being said to me (ie. things they implied).Facial cues while I explained certain things.Body movements of the interviewer as they reviewed my resume.Energy in the room between me and the interviewers.Looks on peoples faces when I walked around the office.Words used by the interviewer to explain how they feel about my candidacyThen, something great started to happenI heard the exact reasons why I will be rejectedI started hearing employers tell me during the job interviewSkills I should be focusing onWhat makes me an attractive candidate and what does notHow to improve my resumeWhen to stop talking during an interviewPossible professions I should investigateWhen I should never have had an interview in the first placeWhen I really liked the company but knew I had no place in itIt was not always easy to stomach. It was humbling. No one likes being told, You are doing it all wrong in a job interview.Yet, the m ore I accepted how little I know, the more I listened and learned. I also wrote down what I was hearing.Here are snippets from interview failuresI share with you many things said to me during and after a failed interview, and how I interpreted it. I kept a log of these interview snippets because I needed time to absorb what I was being told.1. You say you know Google Analytics. Do you mean you have been exposed to it? Or do you know how it actually works?What they meant You dont know as much as you think. Find out why. The interviewer seemed unhappy.2. Just because you know how to Google what to do, does not mean you now know how to do it.What they meant I have more to learn about the skills I claim to possess. The interviewer seemed frustrated from the moment he put down my resume.3. First, let me be honest, this job is not brain surgery.What they meant You are going to get bored by this job quickly because you are smart. Take it as a good thing if you get rejected.4. You led a tea m of 10 in the past. What makes you think you can lead 20 or 30?What they meant They are doubting my confidence level right now. The interviewer was looking me up and down with doubt. Made me want to ask why.5. Wow You look like someone who enjoys traveling. This job does not require travel. Is that a problem?What they meant You will leave this job the minute something better comes along. The interviewer said this but did not seem impressed.After 1000 online applications and 20 job interviewsI was honest with myself, finally. I looked back at my notes and started taking action.I started looking for assistance on LinkedIn. I was messaged on LinkedIn by the founder of a company who helped me get more interviews and redo my resume, Find My Profession.I started taking training, courses and consulted others using the skills I was learning from simply going through the interview process and listening. Whats valued in an Austin workspace isnt the same thing thats valued in NYC, and thus Ive had to adjust. But some habits, I refuse to let go of.As Ive grown in my professional career, Ive learned the hard way that if you dont set boundaries, people will take as much as they absolutely can from you.Here are some ways I guard my time and stay sane in the startup world1. Reserving the first hour of the day for your agenda, and no one elses.If I can help it, I dont schedule any meetings before 10 AM. I may scan my email quickly to make sure Im not missing a crisis, but otherwise, the first hour of the day is reserved for me checking in on my projects on Asana and setting my to-dos for the next eight hours. Figuring out what my priorities are first, allows me to then compromise in a more balanced way when others come to me with their own priorities that they need my assistance on.2. Keeping your phone in do not disturb mode.Being protective of my time means being protective of the energy that I exhibit and that I choose to intake. Productivity does not lend itself to a full and scattered brain. This is why I keep my phone in a permanent state of DND- I also dont actively check my email. I check both once an hour, or every two. My philosophy being if its an emergency anyways, youll call or come right up to me in the office.3. Stepping away from your desk for lunch, ICYMI Itll be there for you when you get back.This isnt just some woo-hoo practice, there are legitimate science-backed reasons on why you should take a breather. Sitting for hours on end has been proven to be unhealthy, and you can even use this hour as a means to work on your relationship with your colleagues or have a networking lunch.4. Automating as much as possible.Automating workflows can help you reach your goals faster, and gives you space to focus on other projects (time is money). I use tools like Asana to project manage and be able to quickly see the lifecycle of a task and where its at in the pipeline, Later for scheduling Instagram posts, Buffer for scheduling all other social posts, Boomerang to schedule emails in advance, and IFTTT to push Google Alerts to Slack.5. Get a change in scenery.Stop trying to fight the 3 PM slump, instead get up and get your blood pumping. Take a quick walk around the block, or if you have a standing desk / elevated surface, work standing up.6. You cant work your best, if you are not feeling the best.As a recovering workaholic, remembering this is what allows me to fully shut off once I walk out of the office. You werent hired to do your job in a single day, or in a single week. Meet your deadlines, get it done, but take care of yourself. Likewise, they dont let the opinions of others keep them from chasing their dreams. When someone says, Youll never be able to do that, they regard it as one persons opinion, which is all it is.They dont beg for attentionPeople who are always begging for attention are needy. They rely on that attention from other people to form their self-identity. Emotionally intelligent people couldnt care less about attention. They do what they want to do and what needs to be done, regardless of whether anyone is stroking their ego.They dont act like jerksPeople who act like jerks are unhappy and insecure. They act like jerks because they dont have the emotional strength to be nice when they dont feel like it. Emotionally intelligent people place high value on their relationships, which means they treat everyone with respect, regardless of the kind of mood theyre in.They dont hold grudgesThe negative emotions that come with holdin g onto a grudge are actually a stress response. holding-gesellschaft onto that stress wreaks havoc on your body and can have devastating health consequences over time. Researchers at Emory University have shown that holding onto stress contributes to high blood pressure and heart disease. Think of it this way If a person were smoking, would you sit there all afternoon inhaling the second-hand smoke? Youd distance yourself, and you should do the same with negative people.They dont feel sorry for themselvesHeres the worst thing about feeling sorry for yourself, other than it being annoying, of course it shifts your locus of control outside yourself. Feeling sorry for yourself is, in essence, declaring that youre a helpless victim of circumstance. Emotionally intelligent people never feel sorry for themselves because that would mean giving up their power.They dont feel entitledEmotionally intelligent people believe that the world is a meritocracy and that the only things that they deserve are those that they earn. People who lack EQ often feel entitled. They think that the world owes them something. Again, its about locus of control. Emotionally intelligent people know that they alone are responsible for their successes or failures.They dont close their mindsW hen people close their minds to new information or opinions, its typically because they find them threatening. They think that admitting that someone else is right means that theyre wrong, and thats very uncomfortable for people lacking EQ. Emotionally intelligent people arent threatened by new things theyre open to new information and new ideas, even if it means admitting that they are wrong.They dont let anyone limit their joyWhen your sense of pleasure and satisfaction are derived from comparing yourself with others, you are no longer the master of your own happiness. While its impossible to turn off your reactions to what others think of you, you dont have to compare yourself with others, and you can always take peoples opinions with a grain of salt. Most of the time, failure results from taking risks and trying to achieve things that arent easy.
